Fortune 100 Life Sciences companies, small upstarts or academic institutions; regardless of the domain, one fact remains constant: they all require continuous training to remain compliant and up-to-date with new and modified regulations. If anything, the difference in these companies lies with their training budgets, as the larger companies have the flexibility to spend a great deal more on training.

This observation, obtained in a BenAstrum study conducted with the cGMP Quality Manager at Tulane University, is a prime example of the obstacles faced by academia. The question becomes, how do these institutions maintain sufficient training standards while remaining within their inadequate budgets?

“When I feel that I’m lacking knowledge, I first approach colleagues that may have knowledge in the subject, I consult the internet, refer back to any publications.�

There exists a ceiling in the amount of information and insight a person can acquire through others and the worldwide web. The guidance of experts, revered as leaders in their respective fields, can be invaluable to improving internal processes, filling training gaps, and achieving a better understanding of new regulations and techniques.

“Your (BenAstrum) courses are very useful and have given me lots of information that has been incorporated into our procedures.  Regulations are difficult to interpret and the information that your sessions have provided has been very relevant to what needs to be addressed concerning manufacturing and quality.�

As budgets keep shrinking, so to do the amount of resources at the disposal of the educational organizations. Positions are being cut and more responsibility is consequently being placed on those individuals that remain. Time is a luxury that academic personnel simply can’t afford.

“Time is also a factor.  Due to personnel shortages at times, it’s hard to find the time to devote to training.�
